French Polynesia comprises 118 widely scattered islands and atolls over an area of the South Pacific as large as Europe. There are five main archipelago - the Marquesas, Austral & Gambier (located in the south), Tuamotu and Society island groups.
The most well-known are the Society Islands, location for Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. Like the Marquesas, the Society Islands feature craggy peaks (volcanic in origin) covered in lush vegetation, descending to blue lagoons and beaches. The other island groups feature low-lying atolls, Rangiroa being the largest.
